This 19th Century document box sports a black overall surface with gold pin-stripe accenting and a scene painted on the top. The scene is of a gold horse pulling a small open carriage with male and female occupants. The horse and carriage are set against a cloud-like white background. The painted scene may be later.
The original mortise lock remains but the key is lost. The box measures 14 1/2" wide by 11 1/4" deep and 4 1/4" tall. It uses nailed construction with 19th century cut nails.
The interior of the box retains its original gold flocked liner.
