This 19th century country pine slant front desk came out of a home in Sturbridge, Mass. The desk interior has four cubby holes and two flush dovetailed drawers. The desk box sits atop a single lipped drawer the full width of the case. The legs are slightly tapered Hepplewhite style. The piece is finished in early red wash. It measures 30" wide, 20" deep and stands 34 1/2 " tall at the back.
The construction is traditional pegged mortise and tenon joinery with hand-cut dovetails in all the drawers. The slant front lid is a single board. The interior drawers have small brass knob pulls and the case drawer has two turned wooden knobs, one being a replacement.
The hinges are original iron and the lock mechanism is original and likely smith made. The piece shows only age related wear and tear with some normal losses to the red wash.
This desk is ready to be placed in any foyer, bedroom, family room, computer room or kitchen - it is perfect for any country setting.
