We found this wonderful example of a painted, true six-board chest in Maine. It measures 40 1/2" wide by 17" deep and 24 3/4" tall. With overhang the top measures 41 3/4" by 17 3/8".
Made of northern white pine the nailed construction joins the six boards in traditional fashion. There is a left hand till with an under drawer. The boot jack sides have a very pleasing "cupid's bow" cut-out. The hinges and mortise lock are original (the key has been lost).
Best of all - the original painted surface is nearly 100%, even the top. The dry, crusty, ochre surface gives a very subtle but effective faux grain look to the piece.
The condition is nearly "as made" with some minor abrasion, nicks and dings to the surface. The till top has broken from its hinge pins but they remain in place. It is hard to find early blanket chests like this in this great condition.
These blanket chest have great utility, even in a modern decor, as toy boxes, TV stands, Christmas gift hideaways, off-season clothing storage and yes, even a good place for blankets.
Due to the size of the blanket chest, it will need to be shipped "ground" and those costs will be provided with your interest. We do offer personal delivery within 100 miles of Philadelphia and in New England in conjunction with our travels.
