We found this wall shelf in Maine and it has all the characteristics of an 18th Century piece. Th nailed construction uses hand forged nails and the thin pine boards are all hand planed and show the tell tale tool marks.
The four shelves graduate from 5" at the top, 6 1/4", 8 3/8" to 11" at the base. The single board sides have wonderful "folky" diamond cut outs. Overall it measures 29 3/4" tall, 16" wide and 12" deep.
The surface is a second black paint, likely 19th Century, over an original brown. The right side has some early repairs and the piece has some age splits and minor paint loss consistent with age. Obviously well used and loved but ready to go back up on the wall.
A rope was added to facilitate hanging which may be original to the piece.
This is just a very honest, country piece that we enjoy for its simplicity, good design and early surface.
