Here is a wonderfully decorated pewter rack with two plate shelves, a cornice shelf and hanging hooks below. The plate shelf edges and plate retaining bars are carved in a leaf and flower design with the ends of the plate supports terminating in carved griffin heads. The cornice shelf has an egg and dart carved frieze. The scalloped and carved lower rail has a carved gargoyle-like face in the center flanked by matching pairs of sand cast brass hooks (four in all) in the form of a young Poseidon riding a dolphin.
The shelf measures 54f" wide by 28" tall. The cornice shelf is 3 1/2" deep. The wood is oak and has a dark stained surface which appears to be original to the piece. The condition is excellent with one small loss to the chin of one of the carved griffin heads.
Unfortunately, this piece does not photograph well - you have to see it to appreciate the combination of carving and brass work.
