This box is "sweet" both in design and size. At 19" wide, 11 3/4" deep and 9" tall, it is a great size for an accent piece in any decor. The design is a hand painted matrix of ed, blue and white petaled flowers, with green stems and leaves, set against a yellow background. The inside is painted a very pleasing robin's egg blue.
The box retains its original mortice lock. The original hasp has been replaced by a separate hinged latch. The hinges are likely replacements.
We believe this is a mid-19th century piece with early repairs to the top which has been reinforced with metal straps at the corners. The decoration came after the repairs and we suspect was done sometime in the early 20th century. There are some age related scuffs and losses to the decoration and a loss to the front right corner of the top. Please see the detailed photos.
This is one of those boxes that looks great no matter where you put it.
