From one of the major contributors to the modern American craft movement! …
Based in New Orleans, internationally acclaimed, modern “artrepreneur” Thomas Mann has spent more than thirty years producing extraordinary jewelry infused with beauty, character, and whimsy. Combining nuts and bolts materials with visual art, he calls his counterculture jewelry making “Techno-Romantic.”
Mixed metal mastery is on engaging display with this now retired, late 1980's bracelet from Thomas Mann. The inventive piece boasts all the artist's design vocabulary—from his industrial nuances and material objects, to his subtle romantic undertones. Employing brass and nickel, it consists of a panoply of links in differing sizes and geometric shapes, including squares, circles, triangles, arrows and quatrefoils. The links are interconnected by fixed and floating, soldered O-rings and each is adorned with a brass, mini hardware finial, riveted atop a silver washer. The work is completed with a variety of abstract patterns accenting the link surfaces, imbuing a sense of whimsical imagination. Wonderfully dimensional and detailed, the bracelet is quintessential Mann—sublime wearable art with timeless appeal and collectibility for women and men alike.
HALLMARKS: Unsigned. I have been collecting Thomas Mann for years and, in researching this bracelet, I came across an identical one from the 1980s (with only minor variations in the metal layered elements and stamped patterns), which was marked with Mann's TM logo, as well as his electro pen signature. The retired piece sold for $350. However, since the Mann bracelet offered here is not signed, I have priced it accordingly. DIMENSIONS: 7-3/4" x 5/8". WEIGHT: 22 grams. CONDITION: Excellent to superior vintage condition, with only age-related patina. REFERENCE INFORMATION: Thomas Mann is a published and listed artist, in permanent museum collections, including but not limited to the American Craft Museum in New York City. His work has appeared in numerous museum shows here and abroad, and has been featured in numerous modern art reference books. The book Thomas Mann: Metal Artist by Lloyd Herman and Andrei Codrescu is entirely devoted to Mann and his work.
