Pennino jewelry is renowned for its extremely high quality and intricate and innovative designs; this brooch is a fabulous example of Oreste Pennino’s stellar craftsmanship and design sensibility. It features a three-dimensional floral spray in a Retro Moderne style; overlapping rose gold plated and clear pave rhinestone ‘petals’ surround a dimensional orb like pave rhinestone center. Eight small rhinestone blossoms hover over the tops of the petals, each composed of three bezel set chaton rhinestones. A huge spray of rhinestone florettes, positioned on overlapping silver wires, cascades downward and upward from the base. Spectacular! The reverse is signed Pennino in block letters and this signature and its style help us date it to 1948 – early 1950s. This beauty is gold and rhodium plated and shows layered and riveted construction on the reverse. Large and important, it measures 3” x 2.5" and weighs a substantial 50.7g. The condition is very good – all stones are present, though two small chatons on one blossom are not flush with the bezel – you can only see this with a 10X loop. Given its age and the large number of small stones in the brooch, I am surprised it is as remarkably fine as it is. A tribute to quality and skilled craftsmanship! Pennino is considered to be one of the Master’s of 20th century Costume Jewelry – this brooch is a special and rare example of his work. Enjoy! $285.00
