What a romantic charmer – the Victorians were very fond of figural items that conveyed sweetness and sentimentality and this pin is a wonderful example of Victorian sensibility. It depicts a key – the ‘key to my heart’– with a three lobed top and elaborate ‘teeth’ along the shank. The key has ornate hand engraving and features a tiny bezel set rose cut garnet at its center. The pin is made of rolled gold, which is a thin sheet of real gold soldered to a base metal – likely brass. The pin closes with an early style safety closure, resembling a diaper pin. I think it likely this beauty dates to the 1870s/1880s. It measures 2 1/2 inches long, 7/8 of an inch wide, and is in excellent condition – really remarkable for its age. Authentic Victorian pins, especially in this condition, are scarce and hard to find – you’ll be pleased with this rare sweetie. $95.00
