This is Urie Mandle’s Harlequin/Troubadour pin, designed by Murray Slater, and assigned patent number 146, 752 in May, 1947. The design for this pin is featured in American Costume Jewelry A-M by the Brunialtis on page 238. The pin described in the Brunialti’s book differs from this pin; that pin is Sterling and this pin is a white metal casting. The pins also differ in the color of rhinestones and cabochons. The design of both is indisputably the same; I placed this pin atop the picture in the book and it is an exact fit. This pin features the Harlequin, playing his mandola, cocked hat upon his head, and signature twisted legs. He has a pink cabochon for his face, two blue rhinestones adorn his cocked hat, and clear rhinestones form the border on his collar and sleeves. The mandola has a green cabochon with rhinestones at the border. He is unsigned and measures 2 ½ inches long, 2 inches wide, and weighs 22.4g. The pin is in good vintage condition, though there is some wear to the gold wash. All stones are present and original. Urie Mandle jewelry from this period, which is often unmarked, is very rare and hard to find; this pin is especially rare. A very special find for the vintage costume jewelry collector. $129.00
