This is an early and charming Scottish bar/frame pin that dates to the 19th century. It is made in a ‘frame’ style with agate cylindrical ‘rods’ on the top and bottom and engraved sterling end pieces. The recessed center is a stylized leaf; both the center and end pieces are engraved with thistles – the national emblem of Scotland. One of the agates is an orange/yellow and the other is a banded red agate. There are no hallmarks or other markings, which is common with many of the earlier items. Indeed, I have read that some ‘purist’ collectors believe that ‘real’ Scottish jewelry is never hallmarked. It closes with a period correct ‘C’ clasp and has a tube hinge. This lovely measures one and three-quarter inches long and 5/8 of an inch wide. The condition is excellent. Beautifully made, distinctive, and historic – these special items have become very hard to find. A stunning piece. $185.00
