This is a remarkable and quite rare pin that likely dates to the mid-Victorian era – 1860 – 1880. I believe it is made from the cross-section of an elk antler, which has been intricately carved to depict a hunting dog at its center, surrounded by lacy falling snow, with an open work twig border. Phenomenal workmanship! The riveted clasp hardware on the reverse is period correct to the pin; it has a tube hinge connected to the pin stem and closes with a ‘C’ clasp. Pins made of elk horn depicting traditional hunting motifs – game birds, deer, dogs – were quite popular with the Victorians. Many were European in origin, mostly originating from Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. This stunner has developed a wonderful patina over its approximately 150 year lifespan and is also in very good condition – I don’t see any splits or chips in the elk horn. It measures 1 5/8 inches long and 1 ½ inches wide. The detail with which the dog is carved is amazing – the texture of his carved fur is visible, and, with his raised head and tail, you can almost hear him sniffing the air for the scent of prey. A very special and unique pin. $325.00
