Whimsical and diminutive, this is a beautifully crafted Mexican silver pendant. There is a photo of this figure as a brooch in the book Mexican Silver by Morrill and Berk on page 242, where they date it to 1945. This pendant has exquisite detail – you can see his toes, bulging knees, and elaborate designs on his serape. The back of the pendant is signed Martinez in script, Sterling JMM 925 Mexico and has the Eagle assay mark, numbered 84. JMM Martinez is a listed silver artist in The Little Book of Mexican Silver Trade and Hallmarks by Bille Hougart on page 40. Because this pendant has the Eagle assay mark, I think it likely it was made in the 1950s. The pendant itself measures 1 5/8 inches long and 7/8 of an inch wide. The marked Sterling silver chain, which may not be original to the pendant, measures 24 inches long. The condition is excellent. You’ll smile just wearing – or admiring – this charming work of art. $82.00
