Fabulously fierce and menacing, this is an early Mexican face/mask brooch. He has a Sterling silver hand wrought frame which surrounds the bezel set hand carved black onyx face. The stone carving is beautifully executed and the silver headdress, with its scrolls and curves, encircles a darkened – niello – background, which provides heightened visual interest. I believe this beauty dates to the early period of silver design in Mexico, as it is only signed Sterling with an etched number – 99891. It is not marked with an Eagle assay mark or even with a country of origin mark. He measures 2 ¼ inches long and 1 ½ inch wide; the face itself measures 2 inches long and 1 ¼ inch wide. The condition is excellent – no chips or cracks to the stone. You’ll dazzle with this very vintage fine fellow. $109.00
