Distinctive and unusual, this early Bolo tie dates to 1957 – 1967. We know this because the slide mechanism is marked Bennett Pat. Pend. C-31, which, according to my research, is the mark used during this time by the slide maker. The Bolo itself is signed AP for the Navajo silversmith Arthur Platero. It is unmarked as to silver purity (not uncommon during this period) but acid tests as Sterling silver. The face of the Bolo features two high relief snake figures surrounding a bezel set oval turquoise cabochon. The sides of the Bolo are engraved with what I think maybe high noon ‘sun signs’– the time of day when a snake is most likely to be out and about. The Bolo is suspended on what appears to be the original braided leather tie and, at the bottom, are two Sterling silver cone tips, each engraved with a zigzag design, top and bottom. The Bolo itself measures 1 7/8 inches long and 1 ¼ inches wide; each cone tip measures 2 inches long. The balls at the tip of the cone appear to be bench made. The entire length of the Bolo tie is 20 inches on each side. The condition is excellent. This beauty is one of the earlier Bolo ties crafted by the Navajo and has a wonderful folk art appeal. You’ll be pleased with this authentic well-crafted tie. $210.00
