English Victorian Uranium & Opal Glass Vase With Frilled Glass Applique
This is a lovely vase to add to your collection. I cannot firmly establish the maker however it would have been produced at any one the major glass factories of the period based at Stourbridge, England prior to circa 1918.
The lines of this vase are exquisite. From its trefoil top rim down to its foot, it has perfection of elegance & symmetry using free blown uranium & opal/opalescent glass.
Free blown English Opalescent glass, is a heat sensitive glass, which in fact has the same ability to be entirely opalescent throughout. Its creamy-white opalescence is achieved by precisely applied heat control to the arrears which require it. This enables a master glass blower, to carefully monitor its opalescent placement and distribution throughout a piece such as this beautiful vase, so as to graduate the whispery-disappearance from its topper most parts, to the mid-section above the frill of uranium glass applique.
The Uranium glass qualities of this vase are exceptional, as can be noted when subjected to UV black light, however as can also be seen, this graceful vase displays perfectly under any lighting conditions, which is hardly surprising, as despite UV being discovered & developed as early as c1801, this glass vase was produced many years before UV lighting was ever available to the masses, let alone known to an English glass worker based at Stourbridge in England pre-1918, who produced this enchanting piece.
Free blown glass is unique. It has its very own qualities and no other piece can compare. Not even of the same pattern type or style, and this piece is no exception to that rule...
To produce this vase took skill and a complete understanding of glass as a working medium. Such was the art of English Victorian glass workers of the era, as this piece adequately demonstrates.
As is invariably the case with these vases with applied trailing, there is a small missing part that is evident. This in the main was due to the annealing process at the time when the glass was produced. However, as can be seen from my photographs, it hardly detracts and the vase still displays beautifully. It is a worthy piece for your collection.
