Splendid 10" 'dessous de plat aux poissons' Art Deco Opalescent Glass Trivet Tray by Verlys, France.
The wonderful opalescent qualities of Verlys glass are instantly recognisable and their contribution to this glass type is of historical importance and justifiably so.
The factory formed in France during c1931 and quickly established itself by drawing inspiration from the glass of Rene Lalique. Verlys did this well and they achieved outstanding examples of glass of the same parallel to the works by Lalique, in terms of opalescent quality coupled with design.
This amazing example of Art Deco vintage Verlys opalescence, captures all of the qualities which are associated with this glass: Design appeal, weight and uniformed control of opalescent excellence throughout. It is gorgeous.
This "dessous de plat aux poissons," pattern plaque de verre by Verlys, is truly sublime...
... Three wonderfully detailed stylized goldfish with billowing fantails & fins, appear to effortlessly "swim" though a milky-blue & creamy-golden amber opalescent pool. Their form is flamboyant & stylish and have a timeless appeal. The ever-changing colouration of this stunning work of art is almost impossible to describe.
This so-named plaque was produced to be a platter. A trivet plate onto which to serve cakes or sliced fruit etc. The thickly moulded formation of the goldfish allows for the above purpose by becoming the feet of the platter when intended for use however when displayed (and in reverse) upon an appropriate plate stand for example, the remarkable qualities of this piece comes alive.
I have always wanted to use this stunning piece as a porthole window for a bathroom or even better upon a boat...
...I just never got around to purchasing my boat! (smile)
It is a phenomenal work by Verlys. More remarkable perhaps is that its factual designer is unrecorded. It does however bear a signature in moulded relief: VERLYS FRANCE
The condition is excellent. Just a minute seashell-thin flake to the polished base. It can hardly be seen, has proven impossible for me to photograph, however it becomes evident when felt.
This is an exceptional item of opalescent glass and will delight you. It's quite simply gorgeous, as my photos demonstrate.
