This gorgeous wide brimmed wool felt hat is literally covered in hundreds of feathers in shades of brown with very subtle golden undertones. The light beige wool felt base for this hat is beautifully shaped by the “King of Millinery” as McConnell was often referred to and this includes the high crown with an unusual indent. Since this hat was another of Mrs. Loving’s special order creations from Jack, the indented crown could have been a favorite style of hers. The light and medium brown feathers have been placed one by one on this one of a kind Red Feather hat and that certainly would be no small feat as you can just imagine. The hat has no outer headband. The feathers just merge smoothly from crown to brim with nothing to delineate the two. On the left side near the back of the crown, Mr. McConnell has placed a jaunty grouping of cream colored feathers one of which is slightly curled. At the base of this added detail he has used soft as down light tan fluffy tufts of feathers and finished with the very same type of plumage that covers this spectacular hat. The brim of this hat is wired all the way around. The hat is unlined but does have Jack’s usual inner hatband that’s made by putting white lace over metallic gold ribbon with a rickrack edge. And, of course, as is true of all of Jack McConnell’s original “one of a kind” hats there is the single red feather attached to the inner label. McConnell’s feather creations are especially coveted by those who collect his lovely hats. With this hat he achieved a very exotic effect and something about the color of the feathers and the brilliant way they are arranged makes me think of a Safari and Leopards!
P.S. Mrs. Loving had quite a large collection of Jack McConnell original one of a kind hats that were made especially for her. She made several trips a year to the milliner's New York City salon and purchased "special order" designs. She also modeled for McConnell at several of his seasonal showings.
Condition: Very Good
There are a few small issues to note regarding this unique feather hat. The most noticeable issue is on the outer brim near the back of the hat. There is a small area less approximately 1/2" where some of the feathers are missing and the bare felt is visible. With all the other feathers in place this area does not appear to be extremely objectionable. On the curled feather on the side detail, there is a very small area that looks like there may be several of the tiny wispy feathers missing, but this could have been the condition of the feathers when the hat was made as all feathers are not uniform or perfect. And, finally on the inner front hatband there is some slight soiling due to makeup and there is a bit on the wool on the right side of the inner hat. This is not bad, but it can be seen on the inside of the hat. Considering that there are so many feathers on this hat, I think it’s a miracle that there are not more of them missing. These issues mentioned will most likely never be noticed when the hat is being worn, but must be mentioned just the same.
