I usually don’t list a great number of hats from the 1990’s, but this one would be wonderful for someone who needs a cloche style hat for a 1920’s themed event and doesn’t want to invest in the cost of an authentic hat from that period just for one event. So, I couldn’t resist and besides that thought, it’s an incredibly nice hat little hat! The simple black wool felt body is detailed with attractively layered synthetic netting which resembles the original trim on 20’s hats that was made from genuine horsehair. The large dramatic side detail made from the same synthetic material as the drapes around the outer edge of the hat makes the hat even more appealing. The netting has a subtle sheen that is not too shiny, but, none the less, catches the light and then there are a few gold sequins attached to this side piece for a little extra sparkle. I suspect there probably were a few more sequins originally, but several might have gone by the way as they are only attached by adhesive and not sewn to the netting. And, who’s to say that you couldn’t add more if you should choose to do so? And, then the final decorative touch is a braided gold metallic binding attached at the base of the hat and then again all around the crown. And, as we all know, there is very little more elegant than the contrast between black and gold! The hat is unlined but does have an inner black grosgrain ribbon hatband.
Condition: Very Good
As previously mentioned, I believe there might have been a few more sequins attached to the side detail, but this certainly doesn’t detract greatly from this chic 90’s does 20’s hat. The detail is dramatic enough regardless of the sequins! There is very slight wear to the underside of the wool that surrounds the head and some little bit of soiling on the inner grosgrain hatband. This type of issue often occurs with this cloche (close fitting style hat) because ladies who wear wonderful hats like this most of the time are finely attired including their makeup! The outside of the hat is in very nice condition and shows no sign of wear.
