Vintage 1950s Beaded Evening Bag Hand Made in France

The front of this pretty vintage 1950’s evening clutch bag is embellished with a colorful array of several different kinds of flowers beautifully created in France by using glass beads of blue, pink, yellow, lavender, coral and green. The flowers are outlined with embroidery for extra detail and some of the beads here look as if they have been sprinkled with sugar and these do have extra sparkle! The floral motif is spread across a background of thousands of tiny white pearlized beads that are intricately woven into a tonal pattern. On the back of the bag, even though there is no other color but the white, the pattern of the beading appears to be half of a flower….if you look closely you will see this, too! There is a gold tone snap closure at the top of the bag and the purse is lined in lovely cream satin. There is a slit pocket compartment on the inner back side of the bag which holds a mirror (slightly beveled and mirror on both sides) which is still in the original paper wrapping which leads me to believe this fine evening bag was never used. And, the remnants of a red string tag wrapped around one of the metal snaps are additional evidence that this bag has seen little to no use. This magnificent little work of art seems to fit the hand just right and will be comfortable to carry with any dressy evening attire!

Condition: Very Good

As mentioned previously, this evening bag appears to have never been used, as there are virtually no signs of wear on the outside or inside. The mirror is in wonderful condition on both sides with little sign of deterioration from poor storage or dampness. There are two things I will note and I do think these issues have come from age not wear. You will be able to see in the photos of the open bag that there is a dark spot on the satin covering the interior frame. This appears just under the snap closure and it is on each side of the bag. I believe this to be as a result of glue that was originally used when the bag was made and over time, it has darkened. These areas actually appear darker in the photos than they do when you see the bag in hand. And, there is some slight difference in the gold tone finish on metal snap closures…..one is a bit more yellow than the other. This evening purse is almost in “excellent” condition!
