Arnold Isaacs was born in 1931 in Canada and began his formal training in design at an early age at the Cotnoir-Capponi Design School. In his last year at this school, he left to study in Paris and in 1953 came to New York City where he went to work for the famous designer, Charles James. While working for James, he learned James’ style of designing in the round and made clothing for private clients. It was during the 1950s, that Arnold Isaacs decided to reverse his last name and became Arnold Scaasi and in 1956, he launched a successful ready to wear line. In 1964, Scaasi decided to focus less on the menswear and costume jewelry that he had been creating and pursue a high end made to order salon where he catered to famous women, offering them very extravagant clothing. The Scaasi Boutique label was first used in 1984 and according to Vintage Fashion Guild’s Label Resource, the clothing created under the Scaasi Boutique label was “top quality ready to wear and beautifully made and quite expensive.”
And, this well made 1990s Scaasi Boutique Black silk cocktail dress definitely falls into that category. The dress is made from exquisite black silk and is completely lined and there is some hand finishing evident in the inner bodice. The outer bodice of the dress is ruched at the front and has an attractive sweetheart neckline. The cap sleeves are ruched as well. The dress extends from the empire bustline to a hemline with just the slightest bit of flounce. The dress closes at the back with a concealed center nylon zipper that has a metal hook and eye at the top of the zipper. The waist at the back of the dress has a “V” shaped seam which dips downward for yet another nice detail. Having been sold originally at Saks Fifth Avenue, you can bet that this wonderful dress sold for quite a bit of moolah! Not your Grandmother’s dress with this flirty, sexy and totally captivating 1990s Scaasi Little Black silk dress!
P. S. This dress can be worn a bit more off the shoulder than what I have shown it worn on the mannequin…..just a case of whatever you prefer! And, by the way, did I mention how marvelously this great silk material drapes??? If I didn’t, I should have!
