Here is a simply gorgeous woven natural straw hat from the late 1950s-early 1960s which is just wonderful for any Spring or Summer garden party. The straw is attractively woven to create a nice pattern with a slightly scalloped edge around the brim that is a double-edged brim. On the underside of the brim, you can see a wired edge that is covered with yellow grosgrain ribbon. The slightly rounded crown is not overly high, but mid-size. Of course, the focal point of this totally feminine hat is the huge yellow silk organza flower at the very front of the hat. The blossom is realistically shaded and rests upon a large horizontal yellow silk organza bow. Small yellow and red tipped stamen peek out from under the petals in the center of the flower. There are several green silk leaves to off set the bloom as well as the stem which is placed upon the left side of the crown. Yellow silk organza covers the sides of the crown. The hat is unlined but does have a yellow inner grosgrain ribbon hatband. Sure to be the center of attention, this hat will garner many compliments from admirers!
Condition: Very Good
This hat as lovely as it is, does have several issues which have resulted from it’s age. There are several edges on the silk oganza flowers that have slight frays. This is not uncommon with raw edges made from this type of material. One of the petals, which is less noticeable because it is placed under another sheer petal, does have a number of small holes. One pointed end of the tie of the bow on the left side of the hat does have a small torn place in the material. This can be seen in one of the photos, but because of the way the material is turned up, I actually had to place this in a different position so that it could be seen! And, some of the straw has some very small breaks, which under close observation, can be seen, but will never be seen by the casual observer! Overall, this hat is in wearable condition and is splendid. Hats from this designer, Evelyn Varon, do not surface often and this one is so very nice in so many ways.
