This fabulous evening gown has the look of the glamorous stars 1950's Hollywood (Grace Kelly does come to mind) with its lovely sweetheart bodice and magnificent rich blue Moire Taffeta material which is beautifully watermarked. Rose Taft creations are known for their fine quality and attention to detail and here is a fine example. The dress, itself, is made from the taffeta, but the bodice ( which does have thin navy blue ribbon spaghetti straps) has an over blouse made of rhinestone encrusted tulle. This gives this simplistic design the sparkle needed for that special affair. One can just imagine the effect this gown would display at an elegant candlelight dinner.....the rhinestones will sparkle like hundreds of twinkling stars in a midnight blue sky! There are hundreds of rhinestones scattered across the tulle fabric.....not glued on, but actually attached and prong set. The neckline is a rounded both front and back and the sleeves are long. The tulle is rolled at the wrist opening to achieve a finished edge and there is a snap to close each opening. The back of the tulle over blouse has a slit opening accomplished by using a hook and eye at the top of the neckline and then using another at the beginning of the back zipper closure which is nylon. The over blouse is attached to the dress and does not come off as a separate. The inner seams of the tulle are very nicely finished, as well as the inner seams of the taffeta. The waist has a touch of "empire", but not to the extreme......it is slightly above the natural waistline. At the waist of the dress, there is an attached taffeta belt which fastens at the back of the dress with two hook and eye closures. The taffeta bodice is lined with the same fine watermarked taffeta. A taffeta cabbage rose with a rhinestone center adorns the front of the belt placed off center. The skirt is straight with a slit up to the knee on the left side. Classic vintage style with this one that never goes out of vogue!
Even though this dress does have some issues to mention, I believe they are minor and do not detract from the beauty of the dress. At the base of the zipper on the inside of the dress, there are a few stitches which have come unsewn, but can certainly be easily taken care of. This issue cannot be seen unless you are specifically looking for it. The tulle used in this dress is fine and I have detected two small pinhole tears in the material......one is near the top hook and eye closure at the back of the dress at the neckline and the other is on the upper bodice almost in the middle of the top near the sweetheart neckline of the taffeta bodice. I hope I have not missed anymore....these were hard to see unless searching for them and I don't believe anyone but the wearer would ever see them. The most obtrusive issue is the discoloration to the taffeta in the area of the under arm....on the left side, it's less objectionable and does not show very much on the outside....more on the inner lining. The right side is worse and does show both inside and out, but even so, with the rhinestone tulle covering the taffeta bodice and taking all the notice....hard to say that anyone would actually take note of this issue. Again, this would be more for the wearer to decide if this is a true bother. This certainly happens occasionally to vintage garments that have been worn.....I have tried to convey the extent of this issue in the photos. There is a very small pinhole on the belt at the back of the dress near where is hooks. And, finally, I believe there is a possibility that a previous owner could have turned the original bottom hem under one time and whip stitched it into place to shorten the gown. It is still a long gown and most likely if need be, this issue could easily be undone. None the less, a nice job was done here.
