The Lillie Rubin clothing line began in 1946 in Miami, Florida and made primarily "Special Occasion" apparel and designed under this label until this small national chain of high fashion clothes was purchased by Cache in 1998. In 2006, the Lillie Rubin stores were closed and were totally converted to the Cache label.
This is a beautiful example of the fine dresses that were made in the 1970's by Lillie Rubin. Made from a soft, black quality knit (similar to the find knits used in St. John fashions with that wonderful "give" that is particularly comfortable), this dress is perfectly lovely and a little bit sexy, too.......the neckline in provocatively low and definitely is a shapely "V". But, of course, the real eye catching detail of this garment is the jewels which surround this neckline! All of the jewels are glass, not plastic, and represent Ruby and Sapphire cabachons interspersed with faceted blue rounds, round, teardrop, and rice shaped faux pearls, and black sequins, and ruby and hematite glass round beads! And, to add to the "wow factor", gold metallic braid outlines the faux jewels in a somewhat swirly Indian inspired fashion! The beading continues around the back of the dress, to a much smaller degree. The dress is straight with a bit of flair and gather around the lowered waistline which is in the shape of a "V" in the front of the dress.....the back does not have this "V" detail. The sleeves are long and fitted and at the bottom of the narrow wristline, there is another bejeweled detail.... a row of rice shaped pearls, small round red and hematite glass beads and more gold metallic cording. The sleeve opening closes with a single metal snap closure and the sleeves have a little bit of gathering at the top...just a little poofy! There are small soft shoulder pads present . The dress has a nylon zipper back closure. This is a great dress for Holidays.....and, you won't have to wear any jewelry....only if you really want to go over the top! And, of course, the more sparkle, the better!!
Condition: Very Good
The knit in this dress is in excellent shape. With all the beading and intricate detail of the neckline and sleeves, there are a few minor issues. There is one rice shaped pearl missing from the detailing on the left wrist and there is some of the gold metallic cording which is ever so slightly frayed on some of the ends. These issues, to my way of thinking, are very minimal, but please view the photos. I did not photo the missing pearl, because while photographing the garment, I didn't notice it.....there are so many beads, that your eye is drawn to the marvelous neckline of this dress....not really to the bottom of the sleeves. This pearl could be easily replaced, if you should so desire to do so.
