When I say "Lush", I truly mean that the velvet used in this is just wonderfully soft and richly luxurious! Deep midnight black, this velvet opera or evening coat dons an empire waist with slight gathers. The bodice is fitted with seams on the front and back. The lower portion of the coat beginning just under the empire waist is somewhat different in that it has a little bit of a quilted look....top stitching divides the material into blocks and there is a beautiful snowflake stitched into the corner of each block! I hope you will be able to see this pattern clearly in the photos (I have intentionally lightened the photo that shows the pattern in order that it would show up better) because it does make this lovely coat extra nice. There are two slit pockets on each side of the coat. The sleeves are three quarter and puffy just above the bottom band segment. The neckline does not have a collar, but is rounded and allows for many possibilities to accessorize. I can see a gorgeous sparkly turtleneck or a lovely vintage silk blouse with a big bow that could spill over this simple neckline. Or how about a fabulous fur collar or beautiful silk scarf draped elegantly with a huge rhinestone brooch! There are nine velvet covered buttons which close the front of the coat and two snaps....one at the very top of the neckline and the other at the empire waist. The coat is fully lined with black satin. Finally, there is a velvet tie belt which goes around the empire waist and is held securely in place with two black thread belt loops....one on each side of the coat.
Condition: Very Good
The velvet, as stated previously, is in great condition.....not faded and very soft. There are several small places (most noticeable on the bodice) that could be steamed, but are hardly seen. The lining is clean and only has several very faint marks to the fabric.....nothing objectionable. I would suggest that the new owner may want to add a few new stitches to the buttons in order to make sure they are secure. The buttons are all in tack, but some are a little loose.
Size: There is a Size 9 tag in the coat, but I would say that by today's standards, this coat is nearer to a small size 8. I wear a regular size 8 and can wear this coat....but it's a little snug through the bodice when fastened. Again, please refer to the following measurements to be sure that this coat will fit properly.
