I adore these wonderful 1960's hats that resemble cascades of variegated colorful flowers and own several, myself, by Elsa Schiaparelli. Elsa, born in Rome in 1890, began designing in the 1920's and opened her first shop in 1927 and had her first full collection in 1929. She was often known for very sophisticated fashions, but at the same time she could be very outrageous! She used fabrics in her fashions designed by the artist Salvador Dali and many times these designs delved into the world of Surrealism and Cubism making for some very interesting and innovative items. Two of Schiap's most famous hats were in the shapes of lamb cutlets and ice cream cones....outrageous to some, but brilliant to others! Elsa is, of course, most known, perhaps, for her famous "Shocking Pink" which she used in her designs as well as the packaging for her merchandise. This beautiful bubble toque is covered with sprays of colorful chiffon posies in shades of coral, pink, and white interspersed with green leaves and stamens and, no doubt, puts us in mind of Springtime! The interior of the hat is coiled nylon netting and is finished with a deep pink ribbon band. There are two attached hair combs that were used to keep the hat in place.
CONDITION: The overall condition of this pretty hat is very good. I don't use "excellent" condition only because there is some slight soiling around the circumference. The material has yellowed with age and has a few spots, but no deterioration of the fabric. Check the photos which show these slight issues which are not noticeable when worn and are seen more when looking on the inside of the hat and certainly do not detract from this pretty hat by one of the world's most famous designers!
