Presented here for sale is a classy vintage 1960s Navy Blue leather handbag. Designed by one of America's most highly regarded designers, Austrian born Nettie Rosenstein (b.1890-d.1980) emigrated to the United States as a child and began her millinery career in 1927. By the 1930's Nettie was not only designing fashions but also creating the handbags and costume jewelry to accompany her clothing. She commissioned her handbags to be made in Florence, Italy, which has always been well known for high quality leather goods. In 1961, Nettie Rosenstein discontinued the fashion side of her business, but her long time business partner, Sol L. Klein, continued to design costume jewelry and accessories until he retired in 1975 under the Nettie Rosenstein label. At the time of his retirement, the Nettie Rosenstein brand ceased to exist. Nettie lived to the ripe old age of 90!
I was fortunate to acquire four fine leather handbags, all made in Florence, Italy for Nettie Rosenstein. This is the second one that I have offered for sale. This late 1960s bag is Navy Blue leather that shows the grain of the leather. Therefore, it’s not shiny, but has a more natural hide appearance which I hope that you will be able to see in my photos. The inside of the bag is soft leather lined and has a zippered compartment and there’s another compartment directly under the zippered one. On the other side there is a soft slightly elasticized pocket compartment. A small Navy Blue leather change purse is also inside of the handbag. The square gold tone catch opens by turning the knob in the center one time and lifting the square over it. The strap can be adjusted to make it just a very small bit longer. There are two holes in each side of the strap with gold tone buckles. The bottom of the bag is accordion style as can be seen in the photographs. These quality handbags made by famed designer Nettie Rosenstein were expensive when new. This handbag has the original paper price tag in an inner pocket. It was purchased at Montaldo's in Richmond, Virginia for $230.00! Interestingly enough there was also a sales receipt for a mink coat that had cost $9000.00!!
The former owner of this handbag obviously desired to purchase handbags of great quality and classic style. These beautiful Nettie Rosenstein handbags continue to be right in style today and are hard to find in this great condition!
Condition: Very Good
This handbag was used very little. The inside is extremely clean and the original stuffing paper was still in the purse. I couldn’t find any scuffs or scratches in the leather. When you look at the leather on the back of the handbag, the impressions of the material that was used for the base of the bag appear to show through as little bumps. I’m not sure if this was made to look this way intentionally or not. But, you can see this in the photos and it looks as if it were made this way to me. Almost like an Ostrich leather texture! This handbag is in amazing condition considering that it’s well over 60 years old. It’s certainly a tribute to the fine Italian leather that the bag is made from!
