Geoffrey Beene was born in 1927 in Louisiana and attended Tulane Medical School in New Orleans and left without a degree in order to work in the display department of I. Magnin in Los Angeles. He eventually left LA and studied fashion in New York and Paris. By 1954 he was working with Teal Traina, a major manufacturer and finally, in 1963, he opened his own business, Geoffrey Beene, Inc. Noted for his well structured, but never rigid designs, his fashions always exhibit fine craftsmanship and detail. He is remembered for designing Lynda Byrd Johnson's wedding gown. Geoffrey Beene died in 2004.
This waist coat jacket is simple but very detailed as one would expect from Mr. Beene. Made from a substantial, yet soft, neutral tan wool, the short boxy style jacket has two front pockets and closes with four wood buttons. Each cuff closes with a wood button and all button holes are well finished. There is top stitch detailing on the collar, cuffs, pockets and seams. The jacket is not lined but has nicely finished seams on the inside---no raw edges in this jacket! A timeless style that would look absolutely terrific with slacks, skirt or even jeans!
LABEL: GEOFFREY BEENE Also, there is a 'Dry Clean Only' label on an inner seam.
CONDITION: Very Good On the inside of the bottom of the left cuff, there is a small bit of wear and the bottom seam on the right pocket has a small section that is open---could have been missed when originally made as it doesn't look like it has come undone. At any rate, neither of these two issues is noticeable when being worn and the latter would be extremely easy to repair. Overall condition is excellent.
SIZE: No size label. I am estimating this jacket to be a size 8 by modern standards.
Length of Sleeve: 23'
Circumference at bottom of jacket: 41'
