What a wonderful find this grand vintage authentic 1940s United States Navy Officers Bridge coat is! Dated 1942, it is made from heavy black wool and is double breasted. The coat has beautiful gold plated Eagle buttons made by the Waterbury Button Co. Under each of the lapels, there is also an Eagle button. There is a broad notched collar and a deep center back vent that closes with one round black button. On each side of the coat, there are slash pockets that are lined with gold colored flannel material. The inside of the coat is partially lined with black satin…….back shoulders and sleeves. At the back waist area there is a half belt with two Eagle buttons. All inner seams on the wool material are nicely finished. This coat has been tailored to fit it’s former owner and we even know who he was and where he purchased this fine coat and that it was probably worn during WWII. Thanks to the label in the inner breast pocket on the right side of the coat we know that the coat was owned by C. E. Simmons and purchased and tailored at Julius Horowitt, 9-14-42. This vintage 1940s long Bridge Coat would be great for someone who does WWII reenacting or someone who just enjoys wearing a handsome vintage coat. James Dean was photographed on a number of occasions wearing a coat that looked like it was a WWII US Navy Bridge Coat.
Condition: Very Good
This coat has very minor issues and is in fabulous condition considering that it’s from the 1940s. Two of the Gold Plated Eagle buttons at the front of the coat are missing. Some of the button holes show some minor wear. There is a little bit of wear to the inner satin lining. And, the cord that was sewn into the inner neck area to use to hang the coat when not being worn is broken. There is very slight wear in the cuff area at the bottom of each sleeve. This wear is modest, but can be seen when looking for it. The outer wool coat is in great condition and there are no holes in the black material. This magnificent coat has been recently professionally dry cleaned.
PLEASE NOTE: When these photos of this coat were taken several months ago, there was only one button missing. I loaned this coat to a local museum for a WWII display and when I went to get it, there were two buttons missing instead of one.
