This vintage white wool varsity sweater dates from 1957 and there’s a navy blue wool felt football patch sewn on the upper right sleeve to prove it. On the other sleeve there’s a blue wool felt head of a cougar, tiger or panther which was probably the school mascot of the original owner. On the left side of the front of the sweater there is a navy blue chenille wool letter “S”. Under the football patch there are three navy blue stripes that are not appliqués but incorporated into the knit. The sweater has long sleeves that roll up at the cuffs and there are 6 round cream colored plastic buttons that close the front of the cardigan. There are patch pockets on either side of the front of the sweater. On the inside of the back of the sweater near the bottom hemline, the original owner’s name, Don Neely, is embroidered on a patch and attached to the sweater.
This vintage sweater does have some issues that need to be noted. Moths have not been extremely kind to this wool garment as there are some holes in the material caused by those aggravating insects! The largest hole is on the upper right front side near the shoulder seam. There is a small hole on the front of the right sleeve near the inner seam. On the ribbed cuff of the left sleeve there are four holes near the top of the cuff. These are not as noticeable as the others as they are on a folded cuff. On the bottom band near the last button hole there are three moth holes and another near the bottom patch pocket. These four holes have material behind them so they are not glaring. There are four small holes under the right sleeve near the seam. Although this sweater has been cleaned by a previous owner, there are various spots of very light brown soiling. Both cuffs show some soiling that actually looks much worse in the photos than it does when you see the sweater in person. The wool has also yellowed from white to a mellow cream color over the years. These issues may make it sound as if the sweater is not attractive or useable, but it really isn’t that bad when being worn. I tried it on and it really looks pretty cool and would be great for a costume in a play or production. Or if you just collect vintage varsity sweaters it’s nice to have the three patches especially the football with the year 1957.
