I don’t collect Hawaiian print shirts, but if I did, this one certainly would be in my collection! The print on this vintage late 1960s Royal Polynesian Hawaiian shirt is absolutely amazing! It depicts a very significant moment in Hawaii’s history and does it so well. The arrival of the sailors and the first American Missionaries in the early 1800s to the tropical paradise is shown in the print, as well as the beautiful life of the natives of the Islands. The Hawaiians in their traditional dress welcoming the strangers with love and aloha reminds us of the sad times that laid ahead of them with the coming of these strangers to their land. The missionaries came with intent to do good, but as we know, instead brought disease and death to many of the natives as they had no immunity to these illnesses. The sailors came to trade, but ultimately brought a number of diseases, as well (and some less savory in their nature). I believe this shirt may have been created around the time that the 1966 movie, Hawaii, was made as the figure of the tall Missionary resembles Abner Hale, one of the main characters in the film.

The shirt is made from cotton and the print is executed on a dark Harvest Gold background. Lots of warm shades of brown used in the print, itself, contrast beautifully with the golden background material. The shirt has short sleeves and a notched collar. There is a small white round plastic button under the collar and a cloth loop to fasten the collar closed if so desired. Under the back yoke there are two small pleats. All inner seams are well finished and there are no visible raw seams. The shirt closes at the front with four wonderful gold tone small metal buttons that are another great detail. On each button, the image of a Hawaiian warrior is shown on each small button. Very rich looking, indeed! Needless to say, this shirt will be an extraordinary find for a collector of vintage Hawaiian print shirts.
