This vintage early 1950s black wool gabardine ladies coat is so comfortable to wear. The coat is not fitted at all, but instead hangs in an attractive loose fitting style. There are seven sewn down pleats on the front upper bodice and the collar is not rounded but literally looks like it has a collar that’s shaped like bird wings. The collar is pointed on each side and upturned. I’ve provided a close up of the upper part of the coat so that both the pleats and the collar can be seen. There is a small round black carved plastic button at the top and there is one more larger button midway down the front of the coat. The new owner may want to sew a little snap on the underside of the coat at the neckline near the small button to secure the flap as it wants to turn over. I have left this as found and the new owner can decide if it needs a snap to hold the flap down. I could not see any evidence that there was ever a snap present. The sleeves are long and have turned up cuffs at the wrist and there are small shoulder pads at the top of each sleeve. There is no defined shoulder seam. The pads are not in the shoulders, but instead in the upper sleeve. There are single welt pockets on each side of the front of the coat and they are lined with black satin material. And, the rest of the coat is lined, as well, with this pretty black satin. There is a center seam on the back of the coat as well as a seam on each side of the center seam that goes all the way to the bottom hemline. The light weight black wool gabardine material is lovely and so soft and makes this garment a pleasure to wear.
P. S. As with most black garments that I list, I have slightly lightened the photos to show the details of the item.
Condition: Very Good
It is my belief that this coat was probably shortened when the shorter styles of the 1960s came into play. I am 5” 3” tall and the coat comes just below my knees. Otherwise this coat is in exceptionally good condition with no moth holes in the wool. The black wool material shows no fading at all.
Label: None Present
Size: I wear Size 8 and I can wear it, but I think leans to Size 8-10, making it a little big on me. It’s not a fitted coat as previously mentioned in the description. It’s a loose fitting coat. And, just be aware that the shoulders do have a broader appearance because of the pads in the top of the sleeves. Please refer to the Measurements given below to make sure that you will get a proper fit.
