Here’s a beautiful full length (ankle length) 1970s leather coat made in Mexico for Skin Gear. This vintage coat is made from the softest and most supple caramel colored leather with stylized lines that I hope you can see from the photos provided. The large notched collar is typical of the 70s styles. The long sleeves are attractively detailed at the cuff with a non functioning enameled button on a leather flap that goes half way around the bottom of the coat sleeve. The coat closes at the front with four round enameled buttons that have the maker’s initials, SG in a bed of caramel colored enamel. The button holes are nicely finished. The Princess Seams both front and back make the coat somewhat fitted if these buttons are fastened and there is a matching leather belt that will serve to keep the coat secure if you choose to use it. I have shown photos of this coat with and without the belt fastened as many people prefer not to use a belt. There are two leather strap loops on each side of the waist to hold the belt in place. The coat is completely lined in matching caramel satin and both of the hidden pockets on each side of the coat are also lined with this same satin material. There are no shoulder pads in this coat. This coat is gorgeous and the leather feels like a fine glove leather. Not stiff and uncomfortable to wear at all and drapes nicely. Made in a style that never goes out of favor, this lovely vintage 1970s coat will be a “go to” coat for many years to come. The more it’s worn, the better the leather ages and looks ever so nice.

Condition: Very Good

Since this leather is very soft and fine, I am surprised that it doesn’t have more issues to note. I have provided a good number of photos showing the wear to the leather that has occurred over the years. Around the hemline, there is some wear at the bottom corner of each side of the coat where you would expect there to be wear. There is very slight wear to the buttonholes. I’ve only photographed one of the buttonholes because it does show the most wear. The other three display very minimal wear that is hardly noticeable. When the buttons are fastened no buttonhole wear can be seen at all…..only when unfastened and then very little to be seen. Again, one would expect to see slight wear at the cuffs on the coat and there are several spots that can be seen. These are not huge spots of wear, but very small due to normal scuffing. On the right side of the coat on one of the panels on the bottom half, there is a tiny knick in the soft leather. Something caught it and probable put this mark on the leather. On the right panel towards the back side of the coat there is another knick that is a little larger but still small. And there are several areas that appear to be water marks. I have tried to show these in the photographs. The leather does have a somewhat distressed look to the smooth surface that seems to me to be original to the coat, but it’s difficult to tell. Smooth leather skins are often not perfect even when new. There may be some treatment (leather cream) that would camouflage these places so that they would really not be noticeable but I’m not familiar with leather conditioning and if these places on the leather are a bother, the new owner could take it to a professional leather specialist to see what treatment they would recommend. Although I have noted these issues that have occurred with normal wear, this coat is still sound, pretty and ready to wear.
