This lovely doll is marked "Germany "S pb H' in a star "914" "9". From those marks, we can tell she was made by Schoenau Hoffmeister. She is a large doll at 26-1/2" tall and is in lovely condition! She has her original blue sleep eyes, that still sleep. She is shown in two wigs....the longer wig is a gorgeous newer human hair wig. The shorter wig is her original brown mohair wig....maybe not in tiptop shape but I always hate to throw away a doll's original wig since it's a part of her history. She also has what I believe to be her original dress...a lovely white lightweight linen. When I purchased her many years ago, she came to me with this dress. It is such a great fit for her that I thought it was either her original manufacturer's dress, or else mommy-made soon after she found her first home. I have added a slip and drawers that are newer-made (and not photographed. She wears old, vintage knit stockings and newer black leather shoes.
This sweet doll does have a manufacturing defect, shown in the last photograph. When her head was still greenware and taken from the mold, there was some stress around the ear in the greenware stage that caused some stress lines when the head was fired to porcelain. This isn't considered damage exactly, but is a manufacturing flaw or defect. I work with porcelain and as a maker of replica dolls, these stress lines have appeared for me on occasion after I fire a head to porcelain. There is no hairline or break in this area...just the porcelain stress lines.
Please take a moment to study the photos of her body, her hands and her feet. Her body is in nice condition, with no repaint. Her hands and feet have no breaks or missing parts and still have the original red outline paint. Her bisque is beautiful, too, with nice full color and a rosy glow to her cheeks. She has no hairlines, breaks, chips or wig pulls. She has an open mouth with four teeth.
This mold number is not in the Foulke doll book and is not as common as some of the Schoenau Hoffmeister mold numbers. It may be that some collectors will consider her to be a tiny step higher than the typical German dolly face because of the different modeling of her face.
