I love folk art dolls and this unusual girl certainly qualifies as folk art. She's probably one of a kind. Her head is made of a natural material, but I can't identify what the material is. She could be made from leather or a gourd or something completely different. Look at that hair. It is part of the head and not added. She has such a charming, artistically painted face. Whoever her artist was gave this doll a strong, calm continence. She has no body except for a cotton slip and homespun dress that is gathered around her neck. She is 14" tall from the top of her curls to the hem of her dress. Both pieces of clothing have fading, stains, and random holes and mended places. Disadvantaged families used so many natural materials to make dolls for their beloved children. This simple, modest doll was obviously cherished as she has been handed down to us in fine condition.
