French 800 silver letter opener or paper knife, maker's mark AC, with the guarantee and assay marks used from 1819 to 1838 in the Departments outside Paris. The Guarantee mark is for Marseilles and the assay mark is rubbed.
The handle is in the formed of a bloused hand holding a flat ring. The blade has a rounded spear point shape, with a period monogram of J D.
This most unusual item is 7 1/4" long and weighs 36 grams or 1.2 ozs. Troy.
We have never seen an earlier example of this form.
