Scottish George IV sterling silver beer or ale jug by James McKay, Edinburgh, 1829. It has large footed baluster body with two bold repousse cartouches on the sides within scroll, shell and floral borders. One cartouche features an engraved Griffin crest. Under the spout and handle, there are figural male masks with acanthus leaves. Hinged lid is decorated with rosette centerpiece and square form pomegranate finial as well as Onslow thumbpiece.
This spectacular jug is 5 1/2" in diameter, 8" tall and weighs 777 grams or 25 ozs Troy.
The soft, warm, original finish is present, with no buffing or machine polishing.
The excellent original condition and clear, crisp detail, with no removals, repairs or alterations, make this an especially attractive offering.
