This exceptional book was copyrighted by Eaton in 1905 and 1906; it was copyrighted by Edward Stern Co. (the publisher) in 1906 and this book was published September 1, 1906 so it may very well be a first edition. The large cloth over board hardback book has a series of stories featuring the Roosevelt Bears (Teddy G and Teddy B) in 18 stories of their travels. The complete title is The Roosevelt Bears Their Travels and Adventures. The stories are told through poetry and are illustrated with numerous black and white "drawing" type illustrations. Even more wonderful, the book contains 16 color plates of illustrations by Floyd D. Campbell; all sixteen plates are present (a previous owner wrote that the plates were all present on a blank endpaper, and they are). The stories and antics are more than precious. One story about train travel features Black porters in darling illustrations; another shows the bears dressing up like rabbits. The book is not perfect. There is wear to the edges of the covers and the plate pasted on the front cover has some scuffs. There is age staining on some pages, though it doesn't interfere with the text. About eight pages are out of the binding which is pulling throughout but mostly in the back third of the book. Several pages have tears at the margins; three have very ragged outside margins. I saw one animal in one illustration obviously colored by a child. The plates and most pages are in good condition, the stories are charming, the bears are hilarious and SO cute, and this edition, while not perfect, has real merit.
