Hand painted on card, this lovely pair of portrait miniatures was found in their original bird's eye maple frames; the portraits have a gilded framed edging inside the wooden frame and date to the early part of the 19th Century, around 1820. It is quite rare to find a pair of these early watercolor paintings. Each portrait measures 6 3/4 inches by 5 3/4 inches; the entire pieces are 9 7/8 inches by 10 7/8 inches. The back paper has been replaced on both and the lady's portrait has a small hole at the top left not affecting the portrait; there is some wear to the gilded edging. Found together, I believe they are a husband and wife, surely English. I've not removed the back paper to see if there is identification or an artist's signature. This is an exceptional pair of early portrait miniatures.
