This beautiful wood box has wonderful hand cut dovetails and the insert is secured on the bottom with hand cut nails. The inside reveals a wood block with nine circles, each about 2 1/4 inches across and 1 3/4 inches deep. I'm guessing that it could have held bottles and been an apothecary (the staining inside the top and inside the circles could have been from contents) or perhaps whatever fit in each circle held something else, It's not a form I've seen before so I just can't say. The box is 3 1/4 inches tall, 6 3/4 inches wide, and just shy of 6 inches deep. It has a hook and eye latch and the top has an additional, thin piece of wood applied.
