This late nineteenth century, tri-footed black metal coal scuttle, or coal hod, is adorned with two hand painted scenes. On the lid is a scene of a plow-horse drawn cart. The scene on the front of the body is of an oriental woman being attended by her lady in waiting. The handles are of a woman's head and bust
The words "PAT'D APPLIED FOR" are painted on the back along with what looks like the letter "D".
The piece has ample room for holding fireplace related items and a place for fireplace tools to stand in the back. The semi- horseshoe bracket on the top back is detachable.
As can be seen in the pictures there are blemishes where paint has worn off, but the overall beauty of the piece remains.
Approximate dimensions: 23 1/2" tall
base(back to front foot) 14"
width(handle to handle) 12"
