Victorian Hair Watch Fob with Gold Fill, circa 1850s
This is a beautiful Victorian watch fob, made of braided human hair and gold fill. The two rectangular panels of hair are comprised of 7 braids each and the gold fill has lovely scrolling decoration. The fob is shaped like what looks like a three dimensional "A". The whole piece measures 6 1/4" x 7/8".
There is some normal wear to the gold fill, this piece is in excellent condition. The hair is braided neatly and tightly with no loose strands and the piece still retains its original fob. The hook of the clasp is marked "W.M. & Co." There is a monogram engraved on the bottom of the fob.
Hair Jewelry either mourning or for remembrance was popular in the mid 1800's. Photography was not readily available, portraits were expensive; so these treasures were made to so one could carry a small part of your loved one with you.
