This Satin Wood knife box from England has been converted into a letter box, with three divided compartments for letters or documents. It has a beautiful marquetry compass star inlay in the interior of the lid and a highly detailed braided stripe band that runs along the entire box, framing its unique form. The interior of box is fitted with a serpentine front and has a slanted top. The box has all its original hardware and comes with an antique French tassel, also over 100 years old. The key to the lock is missing, but the box remains in very good condition for its age. It has some stress cracking on the sides and is missing an inch of inlay banding on the top exterior. The intricate inlay inside of the lid is in perfect condition. The box is supported on carefully hand made feet. It's a beautiful piece to have as a desk accessory, or simply as an elegant wooden decorative art piece from the early 19th Century. Measures approximately 9 by 12 inches.
