This is a striking version of Our Lady of Kazan. The face, especially the eyes are dry and linear in execution. Red lines drawn on the upper eyelids and along the ridge and tip of the nose are artistic affectations to add life and color to the face. Our Lady of Kazan is an icon of the Theotokos popular in Russia since the 16th century. This Icon is painted in a block of wood 5" tall x 3 1/2" wide and 3/4" thick. Lovely saturation of reds and oranges. This piece dates to the first half of the 20th Century.
