This is a stunning Italian Pietra Dura (or hard stone) pendant with chain from the 1880's, in Italy. The chain, bale and pendant are entirely made of 18 karat gold, and are of the highest quality jewelry. Pietra Dura designs are different from mosaic stone jewelry because the thinly laid pieces of stone are polished to a shiny finish and are made of semi-precious stones. On this pendant we see flower petals made of marble, orange agate, leaves made of jasper, and a background made of black marble. The oval black marble pendant is beveled and set into a beautifully ornate 18K frame that has remarkable gold wire work. When turned over, the back of the pendant has an oval piece of glass that can be removed and the pendent reveals itself to be a locket. Here, you can place a personal photograph to carry and wear with the piece of jewelry, close to the heart. This Pietra Dura piece is a fine example of this kind of jewelry that most often featured floral motifs and fine Italian craftsmanship. The oval pendant measures 3/4 of an inch by 1-1/2 and is 1/4 deep. The chain is contemporary and is also 18 karat gold, it is 21 inches long. The pendant hangs from a lovely ornate yellow gold bale. The chain fells nice and has good weight to it. The gold chain alone weighs 6 grams. This piece is in great condition for its age; circa 1880.
