This Victorian era pair of portrait paintings features both Husband and Wife. These amazingly rendered paintings were created in a pastel medium with intricate detail. The gentleman is handsome and stately, and for some unknown reason reminds us of a politician. He smiles and looks on at his very loving wife. She is a beautiful woman with piercing blue eyes and serious demeanor. No doubt the family matriarch, daring anyone to cross her path. She wears a classic pair of Victorian earrings and necklace of the era. Her painting is dated in the lower left, "85."
Circa 1885, each painting is large and heavy, measuring approx 28" high and 24" wide (see exact measurements below). Both paintings are in very good condition with expected wear to their wood frames. There is indiscernible, cursive writing on the lower left corner of the wife's frame. There is also a tear to the wife's canvas (in the upper right background, not on actual figure); nothing that detracts and the painting is protected by glass (please see all pictures for detail). The back of the frames are covered by wide wood boards with aged, peeling paper (Male portrait wood back is partially missing), clearly indicative of a bygone era.
We do not have a provenance on this pair. Should anyone recognize this timeless couple or the artist's work, we urge you to contact us. We will not separate this couple and the price listed includes both paintings.
