From the Belais Manufacturing Company, here is a spectacular tango compact circa the Art Deco period of the 1920's and 30's. The compact is done in a hexagon shape with beautiful etching throughout and has a finger ring for use as a dance compact. The front only of the compact is crafted in 14K white gold, a Belais innovation so celebrated that white gold became known for a time as Belais metal. An applied front inset features a guilloche cartouche enameled in a lovely shade of light turquoise blue with pink roses, blue forget-me-nots and green leaves. The compact opens to reveal a mirror, a well with sifter for face powder and an insert for blush. A bit of blush still remains in the top well.
The compact measures 2-1/4" in diameter by 3/8" in depth and the chain with finger ring measures 3-1/2" long. This compact has been very well kept and is in superior condition. The enameling is in perfect condition with no loss whatsoever and there are no dings or scratches to the surface of the compact The mirror is somewhat cloudy but still useable. The chain and finger ring could do with a polishing. Marked "Belais white gold front" around the rim of the mirror and also marked R&G Co. within a heart cartouche.
