We are delighted to offer a magnificent huge ceramic sculpture by the renowned artic pair, Gene and Rebecca Tobey. This is a rare example of a human figure coupled with their more common animal figures. It shows a rider on a beautifully portrayed bear, with a smaller bison carved out in red on the side of the bear. The red tail of the bear is stunning! We are told that the title of this piece is "Riding a Spirit Bear". The height is 21½", the width (length) is 26" and the depth is 7". It is in excellent condition with no cracks, chips, or damage of any kind. It is signed Tobey and copyright dated '89 (see photo). This is one of the finest examples by the Tobey’s that we have ever seen.
Rebecca Tobey is an American artist based in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Her genre includes animal sculptures made of ceramics, brass and patinas in both forms of modern and abstract art. She, along with her husband, Gene Tobey, created for many decades animal forms which give an insight into the "ancient rock art and fetishes blended with modern design with sculptural solidity." The animal forms created were inspired by the mythology of the Native Americans.
Regarding the joint efforts in creating ceramics art work with her husband, Tobey stated "We draw, carve, scratch, and paint on the surfaces. The piece takes on a second personality." Her art works have been commissioned by both Government and private institutions and exhibited international centers. Source: From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
