This large female creche figure stands about nineteen inches tall. She is polychromed gesso over wood. Her body is formed by a wire armature wrapped in tow. Her lower legs, forearms, and head and hair are all polychromed wood. The detail on her hands and feet is astonishing.
Her blouse with lace and fine pintucked details and her belt are old, but her skirt and underclothes are new. The skirt is a deep maroon velvet.
Based on her construction and the stylistic expression of her face and hands, I believe she is from the second half of the 18th century. She is unusual in that her head and hair are wood; in many cases the limbs are wood but the head is terracotta.
Her left leg is loose but it held in place as she stands because of the wire. There are areas where the gesso is chipped and two loose strands of hair have broken off.
