Fabulous 19th century velvet box, with an ornate relief pattern of a bird with her nest on the top, she even has a tiny glass eye! Rare and unusual, the box has the original highly detailed clasp, and a pale blue silk fitted interior lavished with antique corded lace (which is very beautiful in person, my camera did not capture exceptionally fine lace detail). The box was probably originally for candy, and at some point in its long life the interior was embellished for use as a trinket or work box, today it would be a wonderful display box for a small doll, or to store hankies, jewelry or other items. The box measures 9" long by 6 3/4" wide by 5" tall, the interior is 7 1/2" long by 5 1/2" wide, it has a relatively high dome, the velvet on the outside of the box shows expected wear, and the interior silk and lace are slightly discolored and distressed. The aged fabric is very charming, the pictures do not convey the full beauty of this very old box. These lovely antique velvet boxes do not come up often, this and a fan box I have listed came from a very old estate, the motif on the lid is exceptionally detailed and unusual, I do not think that I will ever find another quite like it.
